The best scope for 224 Valkyrie needs to match a cartridge purpose built to do something unusual for an AR platform round, stay supersonic and genuinely accurate out past 1000 yards from a magazine fed semi-auto rifle. That combination of flat trajectory and extended range means this cartridge rewards a proper long range scope far more than a typical AR-15 chambering would, with first focal plane tracking and real elevation adjustment doing genuine work rather than sitting unused. Our top pick for most 224 Valkyrie shooters is the Vortex Viper PST Gen II 3-15×44, which delivers accurate first focal plane holdover and enough elevation travel to actually reach this cartridge’s extended range.

What to Look For in a Scope for 224 Valkyrie
First focal plane reticles are a genuine advantage for this cartridge specifically because 224 Valkyrie’s whole reason for existing is extended range capability from an AR platform, and accurate holdover references at any magnification matter once you are shooting past 500 or 600 yards. A second focal plane scope still works well, but only if you are disciplined about shooting at the magnification its reticle was calibrated for.
Elevation adjustment range deserves real attention here. 224 Valkyrie’s flat trajectory extends its useful range well beyond a typical .223 or 5.56 AR-15 build, so confirm a scope’s total elevation travel against your specific load’s drop at your intended maximum range before buying, particularly if you plan to dial rather than hold over.
Objective lens size affects light gathering, which matters for the low light conditions common during prime varmint and predator hunting hours. A 50mm or 56mm objective pulls in noticeably more light than a 40mm or 44mm lens, at the cost of some added weight and a higher mounting position.
Frequently Asked Questions
What magnification do I need for 224 Valkyrie?
For the cartridge’s full extended range potential past 800 yards, a 6-24x or similar high magnification scope lets you take full advantage. For moderate range varmint and steel work, a 4-14x or similar scope is genuinely sufficient and keeps weight down.
Do I need a first focal plane scope for 224 Valkyrie?
It is a genuine advantage for this cartridge given its extended range design purpose, since your holdover references stay accurate regardless of magnification. It is not strictly required if you consistently shoot at one fixed power setting.
Will a standard AR-15 scope mount work with a 224 Valkyrie upper?
Yes, since 224 Valkyrie is built around the standard AR-15 platform, any standard AR-15 rail and mounting system, including a cantilever mount for proper eye relief, works without modification.
How much elevation adjustment do I need for long range 224 Valkyrie shooting?
This depends on your specific load and intended maximum range, so check your ammunition’s published ballistic data against a scope’s total elevation travel before committing to shooting past 800 or 900 yards.
